In the previous article we saw how food packaging has changed and evolved, moving from simple preservation methods for personal needs to a true mass production of tools for sealing and preserving food. In this second part <strong>we will see the subsequent developments of this fascinating story,<\/strong> up to today\u2019s innovative techniques and to current eco-friendly and compostable materials.<\/p>\n<h2>The plastic boom<\/h2>\n<p>In the beginning of the 20th century the first corrugated cardboard packages and paper bags were introduced, but it was from the middle of that same century that the real revolution began. Plastic entered the scene, revolutionizing the way food was packaged and preserved: its versatility, lightness and resistance made it an ideal option for a wide range of food products.<\/p>\n<h3>The cost of progress<\/h3>\n<p>From the advent of plastic bags to thermoformed trays and bottles, food packaging underwent a complete change. However, the growing use of this material has also led to environmental problems such as marine pollution and the accumulation of plastic waste. As a result, in recent decades, there has been a growing awareness of the need to reduce the use of single-use plastics and develop more sustainable solutions.<\/p>\n<h2>The era of eco-compatibility and innovation<\/h2>\n<p><strong>In recent years<\/strong>, the food industry has shown an ever-increasing commitment towards trying to adopt more <strong>sustainable and eco-friendly packaging<\/strong> practices. This has led to the emergence of compostable and recyclable materials for food packaging: for example, packaging made from corn, bamboo, sugarcane and recycled cardboard is being developed to reduce environmental impact. Furthermore, technology has played a crucial role in packaging innovation with the design and development of vacuum packaging systems, advanced protective films, smart labeling and freshness sensors, which help to extend the shelf-life of food and improve our safety.<\/p>\n<h2>Towards a sustainable and compostable future<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The evolution of food packaging<\/strong> has led us from the first, most rudimentary creations to an era of innovation and sustainability. As we head into the future, it is essential to continue to promote research and development of increasingly environmentally-friendly and innovative solutions.
